Exploring West Bali: Menjangan Island & National Park

Bali Nusa Transport

While the south of Bali buzzes with energy, the far west remains a sanctuary of silence and natural splendor. West Bali National Park and the nearby Menjangan Island offer a glimpse into the island's wild heart, where deer roam the beaches and coral gardens are among the healthiest in Southeast Asia.

1. The Underwater Magic of Menjangan

Menjangan Island, part of the West Bali National Park, is legendary among divers and snorkelers. Because it is protected, the coral walls here are spectacular, dropping down to 30-60 meters. Unlike the high-current waters of Nusa Penida, the sea around Menjangan is usually calm and crystal clear, offering visibility up to 40 meters on a good day.
The island is named after the 'Menjangan' (Javan Rusa Deer) that inhabit it. It is a surreal experience to see these graceful creatures swimming in the ocean or resting on the white sand beaches. There are also seven significant temples on the island, including the towering white statue of Ganesha overlooking the sea, making it a site of spiritual pilgrimage as well as natural beauty.
2. West Bali National Park: A Wildlife Sanctuary

Covering over 19,000 hectares, the West Bali National Park is the last stronghold of the critically endangered Bali Starling (Jalak Bali). This beautiful white bird with blue eye patches was once nearly extinct in the wild but is now making a comeback thanks to local conservation efforts. Trekking through the park's monsoon forests and mangroves reveals a side of Bali that feels millions of miles away from the beach clubs of Seminyak.
3. Tips for the Long Drive West
Reaching the West (Pemuteran or Gilimanuk) takes about 4-5 hours from the south. The drive is beautiful, passing through the Tabanan rice bowl and along the rugged west coast. Because of the distance, we recommend a minimum two-night stay to fully appreciate the region. A private driver is highly recommended as the roads are frequented by large logistics trucks heading to the Java ferry.
Early Start
Leave the south by 6:00 AM to avoid the worst of the truck traffic and arrive in the north-west in time for a late lunch and an afternoon swim.
